The New Jersey Space Grant Consortium runs a well-established
Summer Fellowship Program to fund talented undergraduate students, especially
students who are female or from under-represented groups, to pursue aerospace
related studies and research work.
On an annual basis, NJSGC circulates an announcement about the availability
of the summer fellowships among the member institutions. These applications
are evaluated and ranked by the program council members, and the top 30%
are selected for the award of the fellowship.
About 60% of the recipients are placed in industries (or industry sponsored
programs) and the remaining 40% go to universities and its affiliated
research laboratories. These involve a wide range of topics ranging from
biomedical technology to material processing to structural analysis to
computational fluid mechanics.
During the past ten years, an average of about twentyfive applications
per year were received from students of the member institutions for the
ten to twelve positions typically available in a given year. The
fellowship recipients are required to present a short summary of their
research work during a meeting (held at the end of summer) and submit
a final report (of about 5000 words) that includes a summary of their
findings as well as recommendations for future work. A preliminary survey
of the fellowship recipients for 1991 2001 period indicates that approximately
75% are pursuing graduate work in engineering (with nearly 50% involved
in full- time study and the rest in part-time programs).
If you are an Undergraduate student in any of the member institutions
of NJSGC, you are eligible to apply for NASA summer academy. Additional
details and application forms can be obtained from: www.nasa-academy.nasa.gov

Undergraduate Summer Fellowships in ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE
A NASA - Sponsored Program Administered by the NEW JERSEY SPACE GRANT CONSORTIUM.
The New Jersey Space
Grant Consortium (NJSGC) was established in 1991 with the mission
of advanceing aerospace education, research and technology initiatives
in the state of New Jersey. The NJSGC represents New Jersey in the
NASA funded National Space Grant Program (that consists of a representative
from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and the commonwealth
of Puerto Rico).
As a participant in the National Space Grant College Fellowship
Program, NJSGC invites applications for NASA Space Grant Fellowships
to support research or work experience in Engineering, Science,
or Science Education.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and must have completed at least
two years of college, but preferably three or more. In this highly
competitive environment, Space Grant Fellows will have the opportunity
to work alongside alongside scientists, engineers or educators in
either an academic or industrial setting for ten weeks beginning
in June 2004. During August 2004, all Space Grant Fellows will present
the results of their summer experience at a New Jersey Space Grant
Conference.
A significant goal of the Space Grant Program is to stimulate students
to choose careers in aerospace science and engineering, especially
students who are female or from under-represented groups. Applications
from such students are encouraged.
Stipend for the ten week period will be $600 per week, and each
Space Grant Fellow will also have $600 available for laboratory
supplies.
FELLOWSHIP REQUIREMENTS
Your application should include your name, social security number,
address, telephone number, and the name of the college you attend
A biographical sketch describing colleges/universities attended with dates, courses and grades; list of honors obtained, including dates; and a summary of all recent employment including military service.
A brief statement of what you hope to accomplish as a Space Grant Fellow. You are encouraged to contact a faculty advisor or an industrial sponsor to explore aerospace related projects for your summer work or you can expect to be placed to work in projects selected by NJSGC.
A statement of your career goals, including their relationship to aerospace engineering and science.
Plan for the immediate future (e.g., continuation of studies or employment).
Your application should also include a reference from a faculty
advisor at your college or another individual who is familiar
with your capability to conduct independent work, research or
science education studies.
